I came to the gym under a bit of a cloud this morning. After getting up a little earlier than usual to enjoy a nice warm cup of coffee and read some news, I stumbled across this article by Douglas “Generation X” Copeland. The title (‘A radical pessimist’s guide to the next 10 years’) should have tipped me off that I wasn’t in for some light and fluffy reportage…
So in order to cheer myself up, I called upon the only things that I could think of that is capable of lifting any gloomy situation: Glee!
So we kicked of with a little ‘Glee-off’ warm-up in two teams.
We did some one-handed swings, snatches and overhead squats, while resting in a number of…um…stress postions(?) while the other team performed their ‘moves’.
After that, it was on to overhead squat practise. Today, as well as putting on a little more weight on the bar than usual, we also practised dumping the bar. A useful, safety critical, and noisy skill. Fun times.
Finally we ran a shorted version of the CrossFit benchmark WOD, Mary:
As many rounds as possible in 15 minutes (normally 20mins) of:
- 5x Handstand push-ups
- 10x One-legged squats (alternating legs)
- 15x Pull-ups
Terrific efforts all round (again!) Of particular note were:
Rosie and Kirsty – spectacular kipping pull-ups!
Sarah – proper, from-the-floor one-legged squats!
Sophie – still, somehow, smiling through the workout!
Oh yes, and if you’d like to listen to the excellent REM track referenced above, try these links:
