With the holiday season is fully behind us, now is as a good a time as any to kick off our 30 day paleo nutrition challenge without the added distraction of cakes and sweeties.
Hold on…paleo nutrition?
Put simply the challenge will be 30 days eating only the food stuffs that were available to pre-agricultural revolution man (and woman). This essentially means that your diet should consist of:
- Meat and fish
- Some fruit
- Nuts and seeds
This means that foodstuffs based on the following groups are discouraged:
- Grains (and grain derived products) e.g. flour, pasta, cous cous, rice, etc.
- Legumes (and similarly derived products) e.g. beans, pulses, soy, peanuts, etc.
- Milk products e.g. milk (!), cheese, butter, etc.
- Processed sugars e.g. high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, sweeties
- Other particularly starchy foods e.g. potatoes, bananas, etc.
There are an ever increasing amount of scientific studies that demonstrate a large number of sustainable health benefits to this approach to nutrition. Amongst some of the outcomes that have been seen, are:
- Fast fat loss (whilst maintaining lean muscle mass)
- Increases in athletic performance
- Decrease in blood glucose levels
- Decrease in LDL (bad) cholesterol with increases in HDL (good) cholesterol
- Improvements in mental focus and acuity
- Improvement in energy levels
It has also been used (effectively) in the treatment of a number of inflammatory ‘diseases’ (e.g. arthritis) as well as complications resulting from insulin sensitivity (e.g. type 2 diabetes).
So how does it work? And why is it better than [insert diet here]? What should I eat for breakfast? Am I allowed to drink coffee? What about booze?
Splendid questions…questions that I shall attempt to answer at the FREE CrossFit London 2010 Paleo Challenge Kick-Off Seminar (Longest. Name. Ever.) next Saturday, 20th February at 13:30.
This is a 1 hour seminar to kick off the CrossFit London 30 day Paleo challenge.
Come along to learn more about the Paleo/Primal approach to nutrition, as well as some of the science behind it.
We will discuss what to eat (and why), what not to eat (and why), how to get started, and tips on sticking with it.
This seminar is free for all CrossFit London athletes.
The seminar will probably take place in the gym, so please bring something warm!
We’ll put on some tea/coffee and perhaps bring along some paleo-type snacks. No promises, mind.
Before you sign up, read this: it’s technical and legal, but important.
Crossfit London (UK) endorses two diets known as the Zone and the Paleo diet. We will gladly assist you in understanding how these diets work.
The liability, and praise for the effects of these diets rest with their designers. We will be unable to offer specific personalised, liability assuming advice.
Any discussion on diet is not intended to replace medical advise or be a substitute for a doctor. If you are sick, or suspect you are sick, see a doctor. If you are on prescription drugs you should not change your diet (no matter how bad) without talking to your doctor first as dietary changes will effect the metabolism of that prescription drug.
