WOD 19 Jan: Total night

19 Jan

Watching Erin go through her first Crossfit London Total reminded me of the radical, life and industry changing nature of the Crossfit regime.

Until now, all that filtered through to the fitness industry was feminized farces: Boxercise lessons, for example, do not prepare you for a boxing match; or for a street fight; or even attending a boxing lesson. It’s a grotesque parody of an effective exercise system with the hard bits removed, in the belief that it would become more attractive to women. Everything we teach not only genuinely enhances your skills, but can prepare you to walk into a powerlifting gym, weightlifting gym or a gymnastic lesson and not look totally out of place.

If we have it right, the fact that we give heavy bars to girls and make them lift them, means that we have genuinely begun to dismantle the barriers that often separate gyms into women-dominated cardio areas and boy-dominated weights areas.

At Crossfit London UK we teach everybody everything: everyone lifts, everyone runs, everyone suffers.

And you know what? It’s inspirational

You rock!

Crossfit Total:

  1. I’m totally choked up! thanks andrew! This makes up for all the times that both men and women i run into insinuate i’m insane for doing crossfit… when its really more insane that we somehow think women and men should train so differently.

And since doing crossfit I can always fit my carry on luggage (15kg or so) easily into an overhead compartment. functional push press, innit.

  2. We would expect nothing less Brie πŸ™‚

…although I hope you do a few reps of overhead squats before stowing it safely away.

  3. I may be biased, but these are still words of great insight. Thank you, baby.
But I do secretly revel in my status of “weightlifting freak woman”

    No PB’s, but very happy with 100kg DL, 80kg BS, 30kg Press = 210
    Go girls!

  4. Coming from an equestrian background where men and women work with, train with and compete against one another equally, I was always hugely intimidated in the gym by falling into neither the skinny cardio girl or scary muscle guy camps.
But hurrah for crossfit and a return to normality where everyone regardless of age, gender and physical prowness is encouraged to progress and improve.
    Instructors, you rock!

  5. Hear hear! A big cheer to CF for breaking down the boundaries! Undoubtedly, the GPP that CF brings shits all over anything else out there.
I love the looks of horror on people’s faces when I give an example of a WOD and smile at their questions of why I would willingly torture myself in this way.
I am proud to belong to the CF community, and although I have a long way to go, it’s pleasant to have such a great bunch of people to suffer it out with along the way. Cheers to you all for your ongoing support. πŸ™‚
And a huge thanks to you instructors for going above and beyond the call of duty to encourage us to do our best, inside and outside of Arch 9. Any other normal instructor would tell us to fuck off to make way for the next class… πŸ˜‰
